In the Senate you will see two options, one below the harbour and academy and the other below the temple and marketplace. Basically you can choose one of these bonus buildings from each side... But which one will be the best.
Generally the best option from the ones on the left is the Thermal Baths as it will bump up your max population number, this will be important later int he game when you start to build huge armies. Alternatively, the Theatre can be considered a worthwhile option as it enables you to increase your culture points which will get you the option of having more cities... As you get more and more cities, the theatre could be considered the best option of the two.
Ok, the ones on the right side... Either the Divine Statue or Tower. In revolt games, possibly the tower has the edge as it can't be used against you as it can in a conquest type action. The divine statue will give you a bonus equivalent to five temple levels in terms of favor generation.
When you start playing Grepolis you will be approached by many alliances and invited to join them, be wary of choosing the right one as it is not good to keep jumping from alliance to alliance, many see this as an act of war and may attack your city if you leave their alliance.
When selecting, look out for who the strongest alliances are in your ocean, or your direct proximity. Look at the average score per player. It is much better to join a close nit group of 20 high scoring players than a group over over 100 players all with low scores.
Choose wisely! Of course, you can always start your own!
Probably the most generally useful tip is to get on the path to a second city as soon as you can. Once you have that initial 2nd city you'll then have two cities worth of resources to build you forward.
Yes, it is important to get your basics such as a high timber camp, quarry and silver mine, but getting that academy to the all important level 28 to research either revolt or conquest as soon as you can is the main aim.
To get there as soon as you can you'll need to spend more time actively farming villages and the other cities on your island to gather as many resources as you can.
